Ethereal is a magazine that explores what it means to be human. It looks at the rawness of our experiences—the good, the bad, the ugly. The issue delves into four themes— feelings, connectedness, moments, and travel. Each topic features two articles that are aimed to create a more meaningful outlook on the world, self, and others. The magazine is a way for the reader to gain insight into what it truly means to be human.
Ethereal is defined as something that is airy, light, and outer-worldly. Through these adjectives, the goal for the magazine was to build a relationship between photography and content. I kept the design of the spreads clean and simple in order to give it a feeling of elegance and grace.
Throughout the magazine, there are blocks of quotes that fill up the entire page and sit beside accompanying imagery. The intention is to draw the reader into the content first. Another quality the magazine has is one-liner sentences that coincide with an image right after it. In doing so, it creates a blend of copy and photography to drive the message home.
Lastly, Ethereal incorporates hand-drawn images at the start of a larger article. This is done to give the magazine a raw, human-like quality to it.
